We are here to help you with information on many different aspects of pool and spa installation, upkeep, and general pool and spa tidbit that will keep your pool or spa running great for years to come.

The first and most pressing issue with any pool or spa is keeping it clean. Especially with hot tubs and spas, with feature hot water, you will want to be on top of the cleaning, so that bacteria does not get built up.

Infections that cause diarrhea are the most common types of illnesses spread in swimming pools. In hot tubs, skin infections are the most common concern.

Dermatitis is a skin infection in which the skin becomes itchy and develops a bumpy red rash. The skin may also become tender and develops pus-filled blisters surrounding the hair follicles. The rash may be worse under a person’s swimsuit because the swimsuit may keep the contaminated water in contact with the skin longer.

Because of its association with hot tubs, the rash is sometimes called “hot tub itch” or “hot tub folliculitis.” Most rashes will clear up in a few days, but if a rash persists, you should consult your health care provider.

The warm water in hot tubs causes the chlorine or bromine in the water to evaporate more quickly than in the cooler swimming pools. This makes the water in a hot tub very attractive for bacteria to grow.

Showering removes sweat, oils, suntan lotion, and dirt that will quickly use up the disinfectant in the hot tub. Soil and sweat can also transmit bacteria to the hot tub water. People who have just engaged in exercise or games that would cause them to perspire heavily or have contact with soil (such as playing football or soccer) should especially shower before using the hot tub.

The temperature in hot tubs and spas should be kept below 102 degrees Fahrenheit. Pregnant women, small children, and people with conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and high or low blood pressure should not use hot tubs without first talking with their health care provider.

Hot tubs need hot tub covers and they can be bought as either soft or hard covers. The main perk to having a hard cover is that it is more durable than a soft cover. However, the advantage to owning a soft cover is that these covers are lighter and easier to move than hard covers.

Two very critical spa supplies are thermostats and filters. A filter is necessary because it keeps spas clean. It is always a good idea to have a spare filter on hand in case the filter needs to be replaced.

Thermometers are available in different sizes, but they all perform the same basic function – to tell what the temperature of the spa is. These items are important because they allow one to know how to adjust the spa settings in order to have an optimal spa experience.
